Kyle Schwarber is one of many star players left unsigned since MLB’s lockout began. The veteran slugger spent this past season with the Nationals and Red Sox after six years with the Cubs. There’s no question he’ll be highly coveted once the lockout is over by teams looking for a designated hitter. The Cardinals are one team that could use a DH, as it’s highly likely that the universal DH will be instituted in the next CBA. Here is why the Cardinals should try to sign Kyle Schwarber.

Recent History

Schwarber, 28, posted a 3.2 WAR in 2021 while hitting .266 and popping 32 home runs. He was named to the NL All-Star team but was unable to participate due to an injury. The slugger was first called up in 2015 as a catcher, but quickly transitioned to the outfield. He served as the Cubs DH in the 2016 World Series when Chicago broke the “Curse of the Billy Goat.”

Schwarber is best known for his power numbers. Average has been a struggle for him throughout his career, as his lifetime average sits at just .237. But he made significant strides in 2021, hitting .253 in 72 games with Washington and .291 in 41 games with Boston.

Why Schwarber?

The Cardinals are in desperate need of a left handed power bat, and Schwarber fits the bill. They have some switch hitters in Tommy Edman and Dylan Carlson, but they really need a threat exclusively from the left side. He’s got good career numbers at Busch Stadium, so he could make himself right at home wearing the Birds on the Bat. He also is very familiar with NL Central pitching from his days in Chicago.

It was reported after the lockout began that Schwarber was seeking a deal in the neighborhood of three years, which is something the Cardinals should be able to do. St. Louis was expected to be much more aggressive this offseason than they had been in recent years, which was already proven correct with the signing of Steven Matz.

The Cards should be going all out to make sure they have a contender in 2022. To build that contender, they need a big left handed bat, and that is why the Cardinals should try to sign Kyle Schwarber.
