The St. Louis Battlehawks trail for the third straight week, but this time, there was no late game comeback. The Vipers and Sea Dragons battle for a potential first win of the season. Orlando still can’t find its rhythm as the Guardians head to Arlington in week three of the XFL.
DEFENDERS 34, BLACKHAWKS 28
St. Louis and DC squared off in a battle of two of the three unbeatens left going into week three. The Defenders have been thriving on defense while the Battlehawks have had two great late game comebacks led by St. Louis QB and former Alabama standout, A.J. McCarron. The two teams battled back and forth but McCarron wound up being a part of the problem rather than the solution. While he tossed four touchdown passes, he also threw two interceptions as St. Louis comes up short. DC’s win puts them alone on top of the North Division.
SEA DRAGONS 30, VIPERS 26
The weekend kicked off with two of the winless teams battling for their first win Saturday night. Another former NFL player came up big as wide receiver Josh Gordon caught a 65-yard touchdown pass to put Seattle in the win column. The former Brown, Patriot, Seahawk, Chief and Titan has always been extremely talented, but has been suspended from the NFL several times for substance abuse (usually marijuana). Gordon hopes this stint in the XFL will get him back to the NFL and more plays like Saturday’s game winner could put him back on the NFL radar.
RENEGADES 10, GUARDIANS 9
The second game Sunday was nowhere near as pretty as the first two games of the weekend, even if the final score was closer. Arlington forced two Orlando turnovers and Kyle Sloter led a fourth quarter touchdown drive to give the Renegades the 10-9 win. Arlington improves to 2-1 on the season. This is the first game this season Orlando hasn’t benched starting QB Paxton Lynch, although the former Broncos QB remains winless in the XFL.
ROUGHNECKS 22, BRAHMAS 13
The weekend wrapped up with a showcase of the other two Texas teams. Houston came out firing, tossing three touchdown passes in the first half to take a commanding lead. San Antonio’s defense responded in the second half, holding Houston scoreless. But the Brahmas ran out of time to complete the comeback. Houston wins 22-13 to remain the only unbeaten team in the South.
