“A Tradition Unlike Any Other”. The phrase coined by Jim Nantz brings a feeling to people, unlike any other phrase. Magnolia Lane, the Azaleas, and Jim Nantz are what the Masters Tournament is all about. The 2024 Masters Tournament is set up to be a great tournament with all of the storylines coming into it. We have baby drama, LIV vs PGA, and all the great players trying to wear that green jacket at the end of the week. The Masters also has one of the best apps in sports and has a great fantasy sports option for the tournament. Make sure you download the Masters app and use it to make watching the tournament easier.
LIV vs PGA
Reigning Masters Champion Jon Rahm took the Green Jacket in 2023 and then took his talents to the LIV tour. The tension between the PGA players and LIV players has lightened in recent months, but there is still some bad blood. Last year (excluding Rahm), two LIV golfers who were Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson tied for second. That was the surprise of the tournament because the public consensus was that the LIV golfers would not be used to playing a 72-hole round. That was not the case as LIV performed exceptionally well and recruited the 2023 Masters champion to that tour. The two tours have been rumored to make a deal and combine tours, but the sides do not seem close to any deal. LIV vs PGA will be a big talking point in this Masters Tournament.
It would not be a golf preview without ever mentioning Tiger Woods. He will have to overcome some adversity with aging this year if he wants to compete in this tournament. Since he won in 2019, he finished T38th in 2021, 47th in 2022, and missed the cut last year. He getting older and that will be something to watch on the second day and on in the Masters. Woods is going to be a topic of conversation regardless, but if he shoots low on day one it might be every topic on every show. Tiger Woods brings so many eyes to the Masters and it will be fun no matter what.
Players to Make Some Noise
The Masters Tournament is a golf event where anything can happen, especially in 2024. There are lots of talented golfers who are capable of winning the Masters, as there are every year. With that in mind, some golfers stand out from the field and are in a more exciting spot.
Rory McIlroy: Mcllroy is essentially the biggest star in golf without a Green Jacket. He has won the US Open, The Open, and a PGA Championship but still no Masters. McIlroy missed the cut last year after being talked about him completing the grand slam of majors. , every time he has missed the cut at the Masters(2010,2021,2023) he has played exceptionally better the next year. In 2011 T15th, in 2022 he placed 2nd, and 2024 is still yet to be seen. He is one of the favorites and that is well earned after his career.
Brooks Koepka: Koepka is an exciting golfer when it comes to majors vs regular events. Koepka left the PGA to go to the LIV tour and was somewhat lost in his game. Brooks is known for really showing up in majors, like finishing T2nd in the 2023 Masters and then winning the PGA Championship to give Koepka 5 major wins. He should be in contention over the weekend, and it would not be a surprise to see him get his first Green Jacket.
Baby Drama
Two golfers in the 2024 Masters Tournament have a potential problem and could have to withdraw from the competition. The golfer’s Sam Burns and former champ Scottie Scheffler are golfers with pregnant wives. This may seem lame and not important, but having the favorite of the tournament withdraw due to his first child’s birth would be an insane story. Burns’ wife, Caroline, is due soon which could mean that Sam Burns could withdraw even if he would be in contention. In any other tournament, it would not be a story whatsoever. But since it is the Masters, and since Burns has never won it makes his decision to withdraw more difficult than before.
Best Bets
The Masters Tournament in 2024 has plenty to bet on, but here is what I like most:
- I think McIlroy will play very well this year. After missing the cut last year, I like Rory to finish in the top-5 at +200 (via Fanduel)
- Flyers for the Green Jacket: Will Zalatoris +4500, Brooks Koepka +1800, and Jordan Spieth +2200
- A parlay that I like is Scheffler, Jon Rahm, McIlroy, and Koepka to place in the top 20, odds +281.
- Another bet I like is Tiger over his strokes on Friday. In Tiger’s last 3 years, his second round is much worse than his first.
- The Last bet I like is Ludvig Aberg(-115) and Sahith Theegala(+115) to both place in the top 20. The odds are +301 if parlayed
