Not as Deep as Originally Thought?
Many of the highly regarded secondary players such as Kalen King and Kamren Kinchens struggled on Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Combine. Here are five players who stood at:
Tyler Owens, Safety, Texas Tech
It wasn’t just the interview that made Owens standout as a secondary player at the 2024 NFL Combine. His on-field performance was also pretty good. He fell one-inch shy of an NFL Combine record with a 12-foot-2-inch broad jump. He also had an impressive 41-inch vertical jump before injuring his groin. He wasn’t able to participate in the speed and agility drills but the two jumps should be good enough to improve his draft stock.
Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson
With good size comes some concerns, as of now Wiggins only weighs 171 pounds. The most impressive thing about his tests was his 40-time (4.28), it had the scouts drooling. Not literally. He also put up some impressive numbers in the broad jump (10-foot-7) and vertical (36-inches). Like Owens, Wiggins also got injured, but he should have done enough to cement himself as a Day 1 pick in April.
Daequan Hardy, CB, Penn State
Unlike his Penn State counterpart Kalen King, Hardy shined at the 2024 NFL Combine. He tied for the fifth faster 40-yard dash among corners with a 4.38 and posted a respectable 1.5s in the 10-yard split. His jumps proved that he has adequate explosiveness to compete at the next level.
Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo
The former Rocket had already been listed as a fringe first-round pick on many mock drafts. With his performance at the combine, he may have cemented himself as a first-round lock. He measured at an ideal 6-foot, 195 pounds and recorded a blazing 4.33s 40-yard dash. Good enough for second amongst CBs. He recorded a 38-inch vertical and his 20 bench reps were the most among secondary players.
Cole Bishop, S, Utah
The former Ute didn’t look bad at the 2024 NFL Combine. He recorded a 4.45 40-yard dash and a 1.52 10-yard split. He looked good in the drills and ranked third amongst the safeties. Those numbers alongside his ability to be a highly productive tackler should be enough to improve his stock for the 2024 Draft.
