After speculation that he may be leaving the Green Bay Packers this offseason, Aaron Jones has restructured his contract. Through his agents Drew Rosenaus and Ryan Matha, the Packers and the Jones party settled on an $11 million contract for 2023. $8.52 million of the contract will be included as a signing bonus.
Not only do the Packers save on cap space by pushing back some of Jones’s salary, but they also save on cash. Jones took a $5 million cut in this deal, coming as a surprise to many. Jones has been the featured back in Green Bay for the better part of five years. However, as Green Bay possibly looks to transition on to their future, Jones was predicted by many to be a cap casualty. The Packers were once again over the cap entering the offseason, and they have AJ Dillon on a rookie deal.
Jones himself has proven to be one of the top running backs in the sport while running at an extremely efficient pace. He ran for an impressive 5.3 yards per carry in addition to a total of 1,121 yards on the ground in 2022. But he’s far from just a pure running back, and Green Bay knows that. As the Green Bay offense uncommonly struggled through the air last year, Jones was a pillar of consistency. He concluded the season with 59 receptions for 395 yards and while adding five scores.
With the restructuring of the Aaron Jones contract, the Packers will move on to other veteran contracts. This front office are no strangers to manipulating veteran contracts to get under the cap. They also will be having to decide what to do with Aaron Rodgers if he returns or what to do after if he retires. This will be the first move of many for the green and gold.
