2024 NFL Draft order

On the morning of Friday, March 15 the Vikings reportedly acquired the Houston Texans first-round pick (23) as well as a seventh-round pick (232) in the 2024 NFL draft. In return, the Texans will receive a second-round pick (42), and sixth-round pick (188) from this year’s draft. They will also receive the Vikings second-round pick from the 2025 draft.

Many fans and draft pundits believe the Vikings made this move in order to move even further up in the draft to acquire a quarterback to replace the departing Kirk Cousins. The Vikings now own two first-round picks (11 and 23). With three quarterbacks expected to go in the top three, could the Vikings be trying to move up in order to draft their QB of the future?

When asked on Thursday about replacing Kirk Cousins, Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah had this to say, “If the opportunity comes where the player’s available, we’ll take it. If it’s not available in that sense, we’ll continue to build around and then find a long-term solution, in addition to what we’ve already brought in with Sam and anybody else we require. So really, the answer isn’t some strict thing. And part of that is the flexibility we’ve wanted to put into our plan for these past couple years”

The Vikings recently went out and signed Sam Darnold to a one-year $10 million contract. It is expected that Darnold will act as a transitional piece before the Vikings find their future franchise quarterback.

It is being reported that the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots are all looking to draft a quarterback in the upcoming draft. If the Vikings wanted to draft a top-three QB this year they will likely need to make a trade into the top three picks with one of these teams. This package could look similar to what the 49ers traded in 2021 in order to move up and draft Trey Lance. This trade included the 2021 12th overall pick, two future first-round picks, and a future third-round pick.

To move into the top three this year, the Vikings will likely need to give up both first-round picks this year, a future first-round pick, and a future second or third-round pick.

The Vikings will attempt to make a trade for either the Bears, Commanders, or Patriots first-round pick ahead of the draft on Thursday, April 25. However, if the Vikings are unsuccessful in attempts to move into the top three, they could be looking to target either Michigan’s JJ McCarthy or Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. later in the draft.
