The Saints quarterback situation isn’t what it seems. Everyone is talking about Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill competing for the starting job. Everybody seems to have forgotten that they drafted a very good quarterback in the fourth round. I don’t know who needs to hear this right now, but Ian Book is the answer for the Saints.
Stats aren’t always the most important thing, but these are worth noting. In his college career, Book was able to set the record for most wins as a starter at Notre Dame with 30. He is also second all time in completions with 701 trailing only Brady Quinn with 929, and he is tied with Rick Mirer for third all time with 17 rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Finally, he is second all time in school history in passing yards with 8,948, Brady Quinn is at the top of that list too with 11,762.
He was special on the field and could have been a first round pick in another draft class. Ian Book is easily better than Winston and Hill in the areas that matter most. He is smarter with the ball than Winston has ever been in his entire career and is far more athletic. Book is also more prepared to play the position than Hill. Hill probably has the edge in terms of overall athleticism, but that’s about it. It’s also worthy to note that both Winston and Hill are much older than Book.
Hill’s versatility in the Saints offense makes him a major weapon, so why would Sean Payton want to take that element out of it? He lines up virtually everywhere, and the Saints do a great job of taking advantage of that. Hill is better as the joker than the quarterback. And do I really have to explain why Winston shouldn’t get another chance to be an NFL quarterback? Please, I don’t want to be here all day. The bottom line? Ian Book is the best quarterback on the Saints roster and not enough people are talking about it.
