Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich announced that the team will be out with quarterback Carson Wentz for 5-12 weeks. This comes after Wentz was ruled out indefinitely on Friday. Reich announced that Wentz will have a leg procedure on Monday afternoon. However, Reich did talk about how confident he is in a possible return.

“There’s no way to know where you’ll be until you get into rehab. We’re optimistic it’ll be at the front end but the reality is you can be anywhere on that spectrum.”

However, in the same announcement, Reich announced that Jacob Easton is the quarterback at the moment,

“The job is Jacob’s right now”

Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady spoke about how Jacob Easton taking the starting reps will be great for his development,

“Definitely it’s going to get him more confidence because now he’s going to be able to envision these plays in his head. It’s going to make him think much quicker, it’s going to accelerate his vision so it’s good that he’s able to accumulate all of these reps.”

So as of now, if the injury is on the five-week end, would have Wentz ready for the start of the season. However, if the timetable is on the latter end, the Colts would not have Carson Wentz until week 8 of the season. But, the Colts schedule is not easy if he misses the start of the regular season. In the first seven weeks, the Colts play four teams that were in the playoffs last season. In addition, they will take on the Miami Dolphins in week four, who had a winning record last season. But the Colts will have two winnable games in that stretch when they take on the San Francisco 49ers and the Houston Texans.

So as of now, Easton is the starting quarterback of the Colts. However, the Colts also have Sam Ehlinger, Brett Hundley, and Jalen Morton on the roster. So the Colts quarterback job at the moment is an open competition.

That’s unfortunate. I was really optimistic about a reboot for Wentz. Hopefully he will have a quicker recovery and can still come in and have a strong impact.
