Fight for the Kingdom

Kansas City Chiefs
PC: Jeff Curry, USA Today Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs are undoubtedly one of the best teams in football. Let’s just state the obvious and get it out of the way, Patrick Mahomes is the best in football right now. But, there is more to the Kansas City Chiefs than just him. A lot more. Let’s break it down.

Big Red’s Machine

Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, and Travis Kelce. It doesn’t get much better than that. Demarcus Robinson is good, but doesn’t exactly fit in to the big three. Cornell Powell was drafted in the fifth round from Clemson and has the talent, and ability to beat out Robinson and company for the #3 receiver. Also taken in round five, Noah Gray from Duke. This was probably a depth pick. The big decisions that were made involved getting the king of KC some protection.

That’s why Orlando Brown was acquired via trade and Joe Thuney came over in free agency. On top of that, center Creed Humphrey came over in round two from Oklahoma. Laurent Duvernay- Tardif has returned from the front lines in Canada, you may recall he was the first player to opt out due to COVID-19 so he can serve his patients and his country. Trey Smith was added in round six from Tennessee as a little extra depth at OG. Finally, rounding out the offensive line is right tackle Mike Remmers. Not a lot of depth behind him, if he gets hurt it will be trouble. All of this should help Clyde Edwards- Helaire have a better season on the ground. The Chiefs need a balanced attack if they want to continue to go far and win championships.

Can The Defense Go The Distance?

It’s possible. The Frank Clark situation is an unknown but if he can play, the defense will be ten times better. But, he is in quite the legal battle right now. If Clark can’t play, could Joshua Kaindoh replace him? He is the third round pick from Florida State. The answer to that question right now is probably not. They play on opposite sides and it would be tough to put a rookie into this kind of situation. But, the rest of the defensive line is solid. Alex Okafor, Chris Jones, and Jarran Reed are solid capable players. Next, the linebackers. Nick Bolton, the second round pick from Missouri, is slated to be the weak side rusher. Anthony Hitchens is back in the middle, and Willie Gay will stay on the strong side.

Finally, the secondary. The Chiefs did not add to this group. But, that may not be a bad thing. With L’Jarius Sneed, Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill, and Charvarius Ward all know the system. Daniel Sorensen is in the second strong safety spot for right now, but the Chiefs do like to play nickel with those five DBs. This could be a sneaky good defense that will be underrated going into the season. And of course, we know the Chiefs are good at special teams too. There is no doubt the Chiefs are the favorite in the AFC. However, they need to put their money where their mouth is.
