Los Angeles Chargers star wide receiver Keenan Allen could be on his way out of town, according to Daniel Popper.

Along with Allen, Popper listed tight end Gerald Everett, as “most likely cap cuts”.

Currently, the Chargers sit $23.4 million over the cap. Releasing Allen would save the team $14.8 million.

Allen, 30, is coming off an injury-filled season, in which he amassed 66 receptions, 752 yards, and four touchdowns in just 10 games played.

Furthermore, since being drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Allen has surpassed all expectations set for someone drafted at that pick. Allen has played all nine seasons of his career with the Chargers, in doing so, collecting three Pro Bowls and one Comeback Player of the Year award.

The Chargers decided to break the bank prior to the start of this past season, causing the team to be in this current cap mess. In the 2022 offseason, they re-signed wide receiver Mike Williams to a three-year, $60 million contract. Williams emerged in the 2021 season as the big-play receiver they hoped he could be since drafting him in 2017. Along with Williams, the Chargers signed cornerback J.C. Jackson to a five-year, $82.5 million contract. Jackson, who was regarded as the top free-agent cornerback, was the Chargers’ biggest splash of the offseason.

Moreover, the Chargers hold many cap hits. Star players Joey Bosa ($31 million), Khalil Mack ($27.4 million), and Corey Linsley ($13.1 million) are all on contracts for the foreseeable future.

So, if the Chargers decide to go the route of releasing veteran wide receiver Allen, it would make sense. His age and cap hit ($21.7 million), are likely factors that will lead to his release. However, that does not mean Allen’s time as a productive player is done. With an inadequate wide receiver free agency class, Allen could find himself in line for a solid deal with a team that needs a true No.1 receiver, regardless of his age.

Additionally, teams like the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Giants could be in play for the veteran receiver.

Allen signed a contract extension for four years, $80.1 million back in 2020.

Evidently, with Keenan Allen set to become a free agent in 2025, it now appears that the time could come sooner rather than later.
