So far, the Cleveland Browns personnel has some holes in them. Some parts of the roster’s holes are reasonable and just need some minor tweaking. Other areas have alarming needs that must be fixed for positive change. The biggest areas of concern are on the defensive side of the ball. On the offensive side of the ball, this unit is atop of the team and exceeding expectations. This Cleveland Browns team is currently 2-3 but they are very close and with some reinforcement can be ready for a playoff push when Deshaun Watson gets back into the lineup.
Note: The Cleveland Browns traded for a pro-bowl linebacker in Deion Jones Sunday night hours after the loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. As well on Tuesday, October eleventh the Browns then signed veteran nose tackle Tyeler Davison. Both Jones and Davison played together in Atlanta. Davison’s primary job in Atlanta was to keep Jones clean by taking on multiple blocks so he could make a bigger impact on an opposing offense.
Defensive Free Agents/ Trade Candidates
The defense needs the most help. Heading into the season the Browns defense was supposed to be the stronger unit. There were expectations that this defense could’ve been Super Bowl caliber. However, from the first game of the season that has not been the case. Here the easiest name to potentially sign is veteran Ndamukong Suh. Suh is a veteran player who could bring leadership and experience to the youngest team in the NFL. In addition veteran, Sheldon Richardson is a prime candidate to be back. Richardson was a member of the Browns team for two seasons who could add vocal leadership and better defensive tackle play. As well as two possible trade candidates in Grady Jarrett from the Atlanta Falcons and Daron Payne of the Washington Commanders. Both players could fit into a rotation for the Browns. Both can be game wreckers in the run game as well as provide an interior pass rush. Finally, some notable names to keep an eye on are Linval Joseph, Malcolm Brown, Malik Jackson, and finally Star Lotulelei.
Note: Last Friday the Cleveland Browns held a ten-person workout that included multiple veteran free-agent players. Of those players former Houston Texans wide receiver Kenny Stills was in attendance. Stills is interesting because he played with Deshaun Watson in Houston. As of Friday, the workout was positive and successful but no contract was offered at that time.
Offensive Free Agents/ Trade Candidates
So far into the season, the Browns offense has exceeded off-season expectations. So many believed this would be a sluggish unit that wouldn’t be able to do much. The overall makeup of the offense is solid, but there are some areas that can be strengthened. That area is wide receiver. Outside of Amari Cooper and Donovan Peoples-Jones, the wideout core is young and very thin. A potential free-agent candidate would be Will Fuller. Fuller as well played with Deshaun Watson in Houston and could potentially bring that connection over to the Browns. Again a free-agent candidate is Kenny Stills. Two possible trade candidates could be Denzel Mimms of the New York Jets and DJ Moore of the Carolina Panthers. Former second-round pick Mimms could be a candidate for a new destination because it just hasn’t worked for him in New York. In addition, DJ Moore could look for a new start as he is struggling to find a rhythm in the Panthers offense. As well doesn’t seem to like the fit with our old friend Baker Mayfield. These players could add a missing element to the offense.
Some notable free agent names for the Cleveland Browns are T.Y. Hilton, OBJ, and DeSean Jackson. As I have noted before, all of these potential targets can bring a new element to the Browns offense. The ability to have the best-run game in the NFL and then add a speedster to stretch the field like one of the names stated above. That would really take this team to the next level.
