Tragedy struck the NASCAR world on the morning of the Monster Energy Cup Series finale. Joe Gibbs Racing announced the passing of his son, Coy Gibbs. The team made the announcement on Twitter. Coy Gibbs served as President and Co-Owner of Joe Gibbs Racing. He is also the father of Ty Gibbs, who just won the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship Saturday.
Coy Gibbs was a driver before moving into the front office of his father’s racing team. He competed in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series from 2000 to 2002, finishing in the Top 10 in points in both 2001 and 2002. He also ran a single season in the NASCAR Busch Series in 2003, finishing runner-up to David Stremme in the rookie of the year standings. Gibbs retired from NASCAR racing following the 2003 season.
Gibbs also worked for his father in the NFL serving as Offensive Quality Control Assistant for the Washington Redskins from 2004 to 2007 while Joe Gibbs was serving as head coach.
Coy Gibbs was 49 years old. No cause of death has been released at this time. As part of the statement released on Twitter, the Gibbs Family has thanked everyone who has wished them thoughts and prayers and is asking for privacy at this time.
We here at Fantom Sports Industries would like to extend our sincere condolences to the Gibbs Family, Joe Gibbs Racing and all of those close to Coy Gibbs. RIP Coy Gibbs.
