In the final minutes of the franchise rage deadline, Daniel Jones signed a new contract extension with New York Giants. The two sides agreed to terms on a 4-year, $160 million with 94 million guaranteed. The new deal also includes $35 million in incentives.
According to his agent, Daniel Jones was pushing to get $45 million per year. The Giants were initially planning on putting the franchise tag on Jones to avoid hitting the open market. The two sides were able to come agreement right before the March 7th 4pmET deadline. Even though this contract seems like an overpay, the Giants structured the deal to where most of the money is rolled over near the end of his contract, and most of earned through incentives based on performance. This allows the Giants to spend money in free agency still to get more weapons for Jones and the re-sign Saquon Barkley, who was just franchised tagged.
This is a well-deserved contract for Daniel Jones, as he had a breakout 2022 season. Throwing for 15 passing touchdowns, 3,205 passing yards, a QBR of 60.8 and 708 rushing yards. With the guidance of Coach of the Year Brain Daboll, the Giants went 9-7-1 and earned Jones’s first playoff victory against the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card.
It’s no secret that the QB market has increased over the past few years. Most recently, Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson were paid over $50 million per year. And this contract is a bargain with Lamar Jackson’s contract dispute with the Ravens and other QBs, such as Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, and Justin Herbert, due for their paydays. Good on Joe Schoen on making this such a team-friendly deal. It’s up to him now to set up Jones for success via free agency and the draft.
