Usually at this point in the NFL offseason, you don’t want your team making headlines. Unless it’s something about a rookie turning heads at voluntary workouts, it’s going to be bad news. The loyal fans of the silver and black know this all too well and unfortunately for them they get to experience it again. In a recent article with The Athletic, Davante Adams expressed how concerned he is with the Las Vegas Raiders’ future.
At the beginning of the article Adams talks about what you’d expect from a competitor like himself. Stepping out from Aaron Rodgers‘ shadow after making first team all-pro without him in his first season and the struggles of dealing with losing over that time. But then he talks about losing his longtime friend and quarterback Derek Carr in free agency. Adams has stated in the past that working with Carr was a big reason why he came to play in Sin City.
He did have positive things to say about newcomer but veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. But he understands he doesn’t have a lot of time left at his age and at this stage of his career. He’s not a fan of the idea of rebuilding.
“[The front office] think this is the best bet for us right now to put us in a position to be urgent,” he says. “We don’t see eye-to-eye on what we think is best for us right now. I’m going to have to buy into this and try to be as optimistic as possible. It’s not what I expected to happen, but it’s something that’s the reality now.”
He also expressed doubt on how the Raiders offense will approach the upcoming season. While he’s confident in himself to adjust to any gameplan the Raiders roll out this year, he says there is a ceiling if they don’t do it the right way.
“It all depends on the style of ball that we play,” Adams says. “If we play a certain brand of ball, I can get [Garoppolo] to conform to whatever. But if we use him a certain type of way, then it’s going to make it tough for us to maximize who we should be this year.”
The good news for Raiders fans is he reiterated his commitment to the team shortly later in the article. However, for a usually reserved and soft-spoken star to voice their opinion like this raises some eyebrows. And given the track record of new head coach Josh McDaniels, maybe Davante Adams should be concerned.
