Free agent quarterback Derek Carr has reached an agreement to sign with the New Orleans Saints on a four-year contract. The total value of the contract is yet to be made public, as it is yet to be inked. Adam Schefter reported that the official signing could come at some point today.

Carr, who turns 32 at the end of the month, has only had a winning record in two of his nine seasons, all of which came with the Raiders. Despite that, Carr has thrown for over 35,000 yards in his career, with 217 passing touchdowns. He’s become synonymous with the Raiders, as he’s spent his entire career there thus far. Head coach Josh McDaniels was unhappy with Carr’s play, so they parted ways after this past season.

Some reports were suggesting that the New York Jets were frontrunners to land the former Raiders quarterback, but the Saints were more persistent. The Saints current head coach Dennis Allen led the then Oakland Raiders from 2012-14. He coached Carr for the beginning of his rookie season (2014), before being fired in late September of that year.

Looking ahead

New Orleans finished with a 7-10 record in 2022 and missed out on the playoffs for a second consecutive season. They had abysmal quarterback play between Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton, so this should provide some consistency at that position.

The first domino of the 2023 quarterback market has fallen, with everyone’s eyes now set back on Aaron Rodgers. He was predicted to be the first one to sign, but the Saints and Derek Carr had other plans.
