After falling short in the postseason once again, the Philadelphia 76ers entered the offseason with a mindset of change. They have a talented duo in Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, but a third star would be needed for the 76ers to emerge from the Eastern Conference.
One of the players on the 76ers’ radar since the trade deadline was nine-time all-star Paul George. He would find it easy to make himself comfortable in Philadelphia with the ability to contribute heavily on both ends of the court.
Within 12 hours of free agency, George signed a four-year, $212 million deal to the city of Philadelphia. This addition raises the question of whether or not the 76ers meet the requirements to win a stacked Easter Conference.
Embiid, Maxey, and George will guide the 76ers to an Eastern Conference title.
By adding one of the league’s most talented all-stars, Paul George, the 76ers will take over the Eastern Conference next season. Their mastermind head coach, Nick Nurse, will lead a team infused with scoring, defense, and star power.
The 2024 Most Improved Player, Tyrese Maxey, recently discussed George’s fit in Philadelphia on the Takeoff Podcast. He mentioned, “He’s a guy that you can plug into any system because of his talent…you have to do a lot of different things to be versatile. I think he could do that.”
Although the 76ers still have numerous unrestricted free agents, they have spent their money wisely. Quality role players like Eric Gordon and Andre Drummond were signed at the right price, while Kelly Oubre Jr. swiftly agreed to return to Philadelphia on a two-year contract.
Nurse and the coaching staff can also promote their 16th overall pick, Jared McCain, to a prominent role off the bench. He is an overlooked piece who will bring effective shooting and defense to the active rotation.
If the front office continues to pursue players who can shoot and defend, no team will be deep enough to compete with Philadelphia in a seven-game series. They will endure an unhindered path to the NBA Finals, assuming everyone remains healthy.
