The Eagles and Commanders play on Monday Night Football. The Eagles come into the game undefeated and the consensus top team in the NFC. Washington has won two of three and is finding its footing with Taylor Heinicke. Here are the Eagles Commanders’ three keys to the game:
Quarterback
Jalen Hurts is playing at an MVP level this season. He doesn’t have staggering numbers, but he is playing smart and taking care of the football. Hurts has only thrown two interceptions so far this season. This ball security plus his penchant for explosive plays have made the Eagle’s offense very dangerous. Taylor Heinicke has only been starting for the last three weeks and he already has three picks. Taking over for former Eagle Carson Wentz, he has gone 2-1 and added some consistency to their offense. With more of his weapons back and healthy, the Commander’s offense led by Heinicke will look to keep their momentum of the last few weeks going. Whichever quarterback is best able to protect the football will give their team the biggest advantage.
Second Quarter
According to the team ranking the Eagles have scored the most points in the second quarter this season and Washington is ranked 31st. The Eagles have scored fourteen or more points in the second quarter every game except their last against Houston. Washington has not scored more than ten points in the second quarter all season. The Eagles have benefited in several games from opposing coaches calling timeouts. Their opponents were trying to get the ball back and score before halftime however it ended up giving the eagles extra time after they picked up third and fourth down conversions. This extra time has led to lots of extra points. The Eagles will want to continue their success just before halftime while Washington will need to limit the Eagles in the second quarter to have a chance to win this game.
TRENCHES
This game will come down to the linemen on both sides of the ball. The Eagles would appear to have the better units on paper, but the Commanders boast plenty of first-round talent of their own. This game will come down to how much pressure they can put on JHurts and Heinicke respectively. The Commander’s d-line will need to stay in their pass rush lanes and keep outside contained or they will have a very long night. The Eagles will need to get pressure with their d-line and contain Heinicke. They are not a blitz-heavy team so front-four pressure is critical. He is not as dynamic as Hurts but is capable of taking advantage of a lack of discipline. Whoever dominates the trenches will have the most success.
