After the Philadelphia Eagles won on Thursday Night Football against the Houston Texas, the birds moved to 8-0 on the 2022 NFL season. They remain as the only unbeaten team in the league and are now halfway there to making history by becoming the second team in NFL history to have a perfect season.
Eagles Have What It Takes?
There has only been one team to ever have a perfect season, winning all games in the regular season and to cap it off with a Super Bowl win. The lone team was the 1972 Miami Dolphins, they finished the ’72 season 14-0 and won the divisional and conference round. Dolphins won Super Bowl VII to remain perfect.
No other team getting a perfect season, makes it hard to believe that a team can do it again. There has been one team that has had a perfect regular season going into the playoffs. The 2007 New England Patriots finished 16-0 but were not able to beat the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. The 2007 Patriots and the 2022 Eagles are similar in a few ways. The times and the style of which the game of football is played so some things are far different. However, the strength of schedule for both teams in their receptive season is one of the arguments as to why they are winning all their games. Another similarity is the defense. The 2007 Patriots’ defense having a defensive line that made them second in the league in sacks. The 2022 Eagles have the most interceptions as a team at week 10.
Stick With It
Why change anything now? The offensive system that they are running is working against the teams so why change? Eagles do not need to change anything to prove to people that they are more than worthy enough to have an undefeated record.
To pinpoint the player that is the reason why they are 8-0 is merely impossible. Each player on this team is doing something and that is what makes for a great football team. Jalen Hurts is looking more and more of a quarterback for the future. Hurts also is showing get an improvement in reading defenses and knowing where he is going with the football before the play. Miles Sanders is averaging 5.0 yards per carry. This is an absurd average, and one could say it is a down year since he averaged 5.5 yards after carrying last year and 5.3 yards after carrying the year before that. AJ Brown is 6th in the league for receiving yards. CJ Gardner-Johnson leads the league in interceptions. Darius Slay is having a phenomenal season that does not show up in the stats book.
Dream Big
The Philadelphia Eagles should dream big, however prepare for a long road. They have to win nine more game to have a perfect regular season which is five more games than the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Now that the NFL has added more and more weeks to the season, the chance of getting a perfect season gets harder and harder. If the team, which is led by second year coach Nic Sirianni, is able to complete the perfect regular season it will be by sticking to their gameplay and not getting off course. They have the potential to make history.
Although, talking about a 17-0 season is a lot easier said than done. The Philadelphia Eagles need to take it one game at a time. Getting ahead of themselves is the last thing they want to do. The game they have to worry about right now is the Washington Commanders on Monday Night football. One cannot get to 17-0 without going 1-0.
