The Philadelphia Eagles have allowed Darius Slay and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to seek a trade, per Dianna Russini.

Obviously, the hope for the Eagles is that the two sides can figure out a future where Slay remains an Eagle.

This reports comes out-of-the-blue, as there has been no mention by anyone of Slay’s uncertainty in Philadelphia. However, it most likely comes as Slay is looking for an contract extension after a career-year. The Eagles, who are strapped for cap, may not be able to afford his asking price.

Slay, a key reason the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl, posted 55 tackles and three interceptions last season. Correspondingly, he ranked second in pass breakups and allowed just 47 catches and five touchdowns.

The Eagles traded for Slay in 2020, ultimately sending just a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick in exchange for the star cornerback. Shortly after the trade agreement, the Eagles and Slay reached an agreement on a three-year, $50 million extension, which is up after the 2023 season.

Evidently, he now joins a long list of defensive starters that could be leaving due to free agency. Moreover, this list includes: James Bradberry, CJ Gardner-Johnson, Javon Hargrave, Marcus Epps, Fletcher Cox, Kyzir White, TJ Edwards and Brandon Graham.

Furthermore, Slay, 32-years-old, remains a premier player at the cornerback position and could garner lots of attention from other teams. The Eagles could essentially attempt to pry away a team’s second-round pick if Slay decides he wants to be traded. Though, the Eagles don’t have to trade him. Slay has one final year on his deal and the Eagles could make him wait.
