After immediate speculation that quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson could be promoted as the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator, it has now been made official, according to Adam Schefter.
Schefter also says that Johnson, who has been with the Eagles since 2021, had multiple interview requests for vacant OC positions. Ultimately, he decided to remain in Philadelphia.
This promotion comes following the departure of previous offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.
Steichen was hired by the Indianapolis Colts to become their next head coach just days after the Eagles Super Bowl loss. Steichen, along with Johnson, were brought in as a part of Nick Sirianni’s coaching staff back in 2021.
Johnson was a coveted coaching candidate due to his partial development in MVP runner-up Jalen Hurts. The two have a relationship that dates back to when Hurts was four-years-old. Johnson played high school football under Hurts’ father, Averion.
Prior to Johnson’s NFL coaching career, Johnson sent three seasons at the University of Florida, two coaching quarterbacks and his final season as offensive coordinator.
Before that, Johnson coached at Utah (2010-2014), Mississippi State (2014-2016), and Houston (2016-2017).
Now, Johnson will seemingly take over as the signal-caller for the Eagles, a job that Steichen held.
It’s a internal hiring that brings familiarity to a previously-thriving offense. Obviously the team hopes to keep the momentum moving forward into the 2023 season. That could’ve come to a halt if the Eagles hired externally. Nick Sirianni previously said that, despite his coaching title, Johnson was a contributor to the Eagles’ offensive schemes.
“Brian is also very gifted in the sense of helping be able to scheme, even though he wasn’t the offensive coordinator last year, he still helps a great deal with our schemes and the way we’re attacking defenses in the run game, in the pass game, in the protection world, in situationals,” Sirianni said.
Additionally, the Eagles are expected to make a decision shortly regarding the vacancy of their defensive coordinator position. The two finalists seem to be Sean Desai, who serves as an associate head coach and defensive assistant with the Seattle Seahawks, and Dennard Wilson, the Eagles current defensive backs coach.
