The Green Bay Packers faced the Philadelphia Eagles in a last-ditch effort for making the playoffs. While the Packers have struggled, the Eagles have surged. They entered in the game atop the NFC Conference led by MVP candidate Jalen Hurts. But with the entire NFC East division still nipping at their heels, they couldn’t let up as they went on to defeat the Packers 40-33, Sunday night.

First Quarter

Hurts and company promptly went right down the field on their opening drive. Led by two rushes for 51 yards by Hurts, it resulted in a score. It was a goal-line run by backup RB Kenneth Gainwell. The Packers had to answer. Instead, Rodgers threw an interception on the third play to corner Josiah Scott off of a deflection. A couple of plays later, Miles Sanders rushed in another touchdown, but the extra point was missed.

Down 13-0, it was already looking over for the green and gold. However, they managed to throw together a good response that ended in a 22-yard rushing score from AJ Dillon. The Eagles, shortly after, turned it over to the Packers on a failed fourth down attempt. Rodgers connected with longtime friend and teammate Randall Cobb on the ensuing drive. 14-13 Packers over the Eagles. But the Eagles were moving the ball once again.

Second Quarter

And on the first play of the second Miles Sanders had his second rushing touchdown of the night. The Packers again were driving as the teams were trading haymakers. However, an ill-advised throw over the middle led to an interception by undrafted rookie safety Reed Blankenship. The Eagles then maneuvered into Packer territory when they themselves turned it over on an AJ Brown fumble. Again, a couple of plays were all Green Bay needed to turn it into six after Rodgers found Aaron Jones for a 23-yard catch. After another missed extra point, we were tied at 20 all in an absolute barn burner.

Following that, we had time to breathe. We actually had two punts in a row. It looked like we could be heading into halftime tied, but Hurts had other ideas. Slicing and dicing his way down the field on a two-minute drill, he found paydirt in the form of Quez Watkins. The shifty wide receiver hauled in a 30-yard heave giving the Eagles the lead 27-20 at the half.

Third Quarter

The second half opened up with a three-and-out from the Packers. They’ve struggled offensively on opening drives this year a lot. The Eagles on the other hand do not struggle much. Miles Sanders gained chunks of yardage at a time as they stormed down the field. On the eleventh play of the drive, Hurts hit AJ Brown for a short touchdown catch. The Eagles were once again leading the Packers by two scores, 34-20.

All the while Rodgers was getting his broken thumb looked at by trainers on the GB sideline. The Packers ran it down the field using the powerful duo of Dillon and Jones, but ultimately fell short of the endzone and settled for a field goal. To the dismay of many Packer fans, Rodgers then headed into the locker room.

Fourth Quarter

As the Eagles once again battered the Packers’ defense, Rodgers emerged from the locker room. He returned without a helmet and without a jersey. His night was done. Finally, after an Eagles field goal, we would get to see what Jordan Love had in store. And we didn’t have to wait long. Four plays in, Love hit Christian Watson for a 63-yard strike and a touchdown cutting it to a one-score game.

Once more the Eagles took to the ground to attack, and once again it worked. Using Sanders, Gainwell, and Hurts, they drudged downfield in route to a field goal. The Packers in a final real effort moved into the Eagles’ red zone for a field goal themselves. The onside kick by Mason Crosby was recovered by Philly basically ending the game.

As the Packers fall to 4-8 all but eliminating them from postseason contention, there are some positives to take away here. Christian Watson and Jordan Love played well. The running game looked good. This looks like a team that needs to retool instead of rebuild in the offseason. The Eagles move to 10-1 after rushing for over 350 yards in a dominating offensive performance. They look like the real deal. And Jalen Hurts adds another performance to his MVP season resume.
