Former Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward has rescinded his name from the 2024 NFL Draft and will instead head to Miami, according to his own social medias.
After announcing his intentions to leave WSU, the former Cougar quarterback had declared for the NFL Draft. But apparently hasn’t gotten much sleep since then.
“Ever since I declared, I haven’t gotten a lot of sleep,” Ward told 247Sports. “It’s always been in the back of mind, creeping up there. I feel like it’s a win-win situation. I can go (to Miami) behind a great head coach, great offensive coordinator in a great offense, I feel like I can improve my stock even more. There were a lot of things coming into the picture. But I love playing college football, and I feel like there’s just more left on the table for me.”
Prior to Cameron Ward’s commitment, it had seemed like Miami struck out on their quarterback options. Had that been the case, Cristobal would’ve been left to choose between Jacurri Brown, Emory Williams and Jayden George. Brown and Williams both saw some time in 2023. The latter played in more games, but the pair combined for 651 yards and four touchdowns. Incumbent starter Tyler Van Dyke took his talents to Wisconsin. The commitment had come out of the dark. Ward had visited the Hurricanes before gauging his draft interest. When their options were wearing thin, Miami had left the option open for Cameron Ward.
The Hurricanes did land one other quarterback through the transfer portal in FCS All-American Reese Poffenbarger.
Not sure how this move will work out for Cam Ward. Cristobal and his staff are high on Williams. Many times in 2023 they started Williams over Van Dyke. Ward only has one year of eligibility left. Although, with his experience and talent alone, Ward should be the obvious choice to start. It’ll be a healthy battle and I wouldn’t put it past the Miami coaching staff to start one of the other choices of their new quarterback.
