In Friday night’s Bellator 296 Main event, Former Middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi faced rising contender Fabian Edwards in a title eliminator at 185 pounds. Edwards entered the contest as a (+215) underdog at online sportsbooks. Although Edwards was facing the toughest opponent of his career he rose to the occasion and dismantled Mousasi over five rounds. Edwards was the faster fighter standing and was also able to take Mousasi to the ground.
After a hard-fought five rounds, Fabian Edwards was awarded a Unanimous decision victory (49-46, 49-46, 49-46). After Bellator 296’s Main event current Champion Johnny Eblen (13-0) walked into the cage to congratulate Edwards and go face-to-face with his next opponent. The two fiery competitors exchanged words before being separated.
Fabian Edwards is the older brother of current UFC Welterweight champion Leon Edwards and is quickly making a name for himself in Bellator. On his current three-fight win streak, Edwards has defeated Mousasi, Charlie Ward, and former UFC Champion Lyoto Machida. Edwards will face Eblen in September from Dublin, Ireland. This is an intriguing stylistic matchup between a dominant wrestler in Eblen and an explosive striker in Edwards. Eblen will need to use his collegiate wrestling background against Edwards. If Eblen can not take the fight to the ground he may have problems striking with Edwards.
Next for Bellator
Bellator will return in June with a massive two-title fight main card from Chicago, Illinois. In the Main Event Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion Vadim Nemkov (16-2) will face former UFC title challenger Yoel “The Soldier of God” Romero (15-6). This event will take place at the Wintrust Arena, June 16th.
