Houston Astros Biggest Weapon

The Houston Astros are on the verge of doing something historically special this 2022 playoffs. Up to now they are undefeated through two rounds. Sweeping the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees back to back. They might be the most complete team in the league right now, yet, one player that you do not expect is their biggest weapon. Ryan Pressly.

Ryan Pressly in the 9th

This season Ryan Pressly is the Houston Astros closer, and this postseason he has been magnificent. As good as the Astros have been, their one “flaw” if you will has been the lack of blowing teams out.

All season they have won close, low scoring games. Weather it be 3-2, or 4-3, the result has been the same. Get the ball to Pressly in the 9th inning with any kind of lead and you can count that game as a win.

In the Mariners series, which was a little different. Yordan Alvarez hitting a walk-off bomb in game 1, and then game 3 going 18 innings before being decided 1-0.

The Yankees series was a little more traditional. Pressly pitched 1.1 innings in game 1 to record the save, striking out 3 in a 4-2 victory. Game 2 was basically the same, Pressly pitched the 9th inning striking out 3, recording the save in a 3-2 game. Then Game 3 was a blowout 5-0.

In Game 6, however, Pressly was called to pitch the bottom of the 9th inning with a 1 run lead to close the series. Pressly did just that, recording another save against the mighty Yankees to give send the Astros to the World Series for the fourth time in six years.

Ryan Pressly Playoff Stats

This postseason alone, Pressly pitched 5.1 innings over 5 games. He recorded a save in four of those games. In those 5.1 innings he struck out eight batters in total.

The bottom line for the Houston Astros in this World Series. If they can get the ball to Ryan Pressly with a lead in the 9th inning, their chance of winning that game is high.
