Today, the Philadelphia Flyers traded defenseman Ivan Provorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of a three-way trade between them and the Los Angeles Kings. The details of the trade are as follows:
Columbus receives:
Defenseman Ivan Provorov (from Philadelphia via L.A., L.A. retains 30% salary)
Los Angeles receives:
Defenseman Kevin Connauton (from Columbus via Philadelphia)
Forward Hayden Hodgson (from Philadelphia)
Philadelphia receives:
Goalie Cal Petersen (from L.A.)
Defenseman Sean Walker (from L.A.)
Defenseman Helge Grans (from L.A.)
2023 1st round pick (from L.A. via Columbus)
2024 2nd round pick (from L.A.)
Conditional 2024 2nd round pick (Philadelphia will either receive Columbus’ 2nd round pick in 2024 or 2025)
What this accomplishes for Columbus
After trading away Vladislav Gavrikov to the Kings at the trade deadline, the Blue Jackets’ blue line consisted of Adam Boqvist and his merry band of fringe players. This was not due to lack of acquisitions; Zach Werenski, Jake Bean, and Erik Gudbranson were out due to long-term injuries.
The Jackets themselves lost 545 man games due to injury, second most in the NHL. The addition of Ivan Provorov brings Columbus another left-handed defenseman they can reliably slot into the second pair. Columbus needs anything and everything to advance what will be a long-term rebuild.
What this accomplishes for Los Angeles
On the surface, it does not look like the Kings got much out of this trade. In reality, they accomplished a goal of theirs they have had for months: get rid of Cal Petersen. Petersen went from a promising young goaltender to having one of the most unmovable contracts in the league.
This frees up just south of $4 million in cap space for the Kings, cap space they can use to re-sign Vladislav Gavrikov. They can also use this newfound cap space to peruse the trade market for a goalie they feel will be the answer… perhaps Carter Hart?
What this accomplishes for Philadelphia
Ivan Provorov is the first of what figures to be several players on the way out of Philadelphia as new general manager Danny Briere begins his plans for a rebuild. The Flyers are getting significant draft capital out of this, three picks in the top 64 is nothing to sneeze at (perhaps two of those three will be in the top 35).
Other players such as the aforementioned Hart, Travis Konecny, and Tony Deangelo may all be on their way out in exchange for future draft picks and prospects. After Chuck Fletcher failed to admit the Flyers needed to rebuild, Briere is doing what Fletcher could not. The Flyers are officially starting from scratch and this trade is a good start.
