Mac Jones

The Jacksonville Jaguars traded for Patriots QB Mac Jones Sunday morning. Jacksonville sends a 2024 sixth-round pick.

What does this mean moving forward in Duval County?

It means there is competition for Trevor Lawrence as he has not fully developed into the No. 1 pick they hoped for. For some, that is hard to hear after Lawrence’s 2022 season. However, Jones does have a chance to make it a competitive battle.

Mac Jones Vs Trevor Lawrence

Through their first three seasons, Lawrence and Jones have similar stats. This makes the trade turn into a potential quarterback battle.

Jones through his first three seasons has a record of 18-24, one playoff appearance, 66.1 completion percentage, 8,918 passing yards, 46 touchdowns, 36 interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 85.8. Unfortunately, in many eyes, Jones will not be looked at as an NFL-caliber starter despite his impressive rookie year due to Belichick.

However, after completing a 27-point comeback against the Chargers last season in the playoffs, the thought was the Jaguars have found their franchise quarterback. However, Lawrence struggled majorly after going from 6-2 to 3-6 down the stretch causing the Jaguars to miss the playoffs. With this collapse down the stretch, the confidence could be wavering in Jacksonville after trading for Mac Jones.

If Trevor Lawrence doesn’t have the season he had in 2022, the Jaguars could make the move to Mac Jones.

Lastly, if Lawrence suffers an injury during the 2024 season the Jaguars don’t need to worry as they have added depth and good quarterback play. This trade no doubt helps the Jaguars in many ways as they look to see whether Lawrence or Jones will be the long-term starter or a dynamic 1-2 punch.
