Fletcher Cox

It’s not often anymore that a player stays in one city for the entirety of their career. No matter what sport we’re talking about. Well in this case we are talking about the NFL, and that was the case with Fletcher Cox who stayed in Philadelphia for 12 years. On Sunday, Fletcher Cox announced his retirement on social media. Following in the footsteps of Jason Kelce, who officially announced his retirement last week.

“After much reflection, I have made the decision to retire from the game of football,” Cox stated at the end of his post. “I gave everything I had to this team and to this city. I don’t know what’s next for me, but I do know that I’m forever grateful for my time here in Philadelphia and with the Eagles organization. Go Birds!”

Since the moment he was drafted, Cox has been a problem for opposing offensive lines. The former Mississippi State product, now 33 has racked up the stats over 12 seasons. In the end, posting a total of 70.0 sacks, 519 tackles and 173 quarterback hits.

With the retirement of Fletcher Cox and Kelce, the Eagles have lost two players who have been valuable to their organization for over a decade. Even if Cox didn’t retire, a departure from the Eagles was looming. His name has been thrown around in trade talks. It was likely that the Eagles could have cut him in order to save some money as they are expected to allocate their financial resources in other ways. Nobody would have blamed them either. The Eagles need to get younger and are already set for their future at the defensive tackle position.

Cox will likely one day be a Hall of Famer, we here at Fantom Sports would like to wish him well in his future endeavors.
