Jim Schwartz will be hired as the Cleveland Browns’ new defensive coordinator. Schwartz brings a wealth of Knowledge as a coach in the NFL. He will replace former defensive coordinator Joe Woods whose’ defense underperformed this past season. Many believed that if the defense was better Cleveland might have been a playoff team this season. For instance, at the beginning of the year, the first four games were very winnable games for the Browns. Above all, it was various defensive letdowns that cost the Browns early season victories. Schwartz will look to bring the stability and communication lacking for this defense.

Jim Schwartz Beginning

Schwartz began his coaching career on the staff with Bill Belichick back in the 80s. That job was with the Cleveland Browns when Belichick was the head coach. Schwartz has been a long-tenured coach in the league and had the most experience of potential candidates. Schwartz has multiple defensive coordinator stints under his belt as well as head coaching experience.

Schwartz will be hired for the Browns’ defensive coordinator position after his stint with the Tennesse Titans. He will head to Cleveland following two seasons with the Titans as a defensive assistant and analyst. As a result, of Schwartz’s long-tenured career, he was previously with the Titans from 2001-08. After that season Schwartz became the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2009-2013. His record in Detroit was only 29-51. As well had a short stint in Buffalo with the Bills during the 2014 season. The most success that he experienced was with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016-20. During that tenure, he won a Super Bowl under Doug Pederson in 2017.

The Fit In Cleveland

This past season the Cleveland Browns were mediocre on defense. They finished 15th in the league for yards allowed. As well they were 20th in scoring defense in the NFL. Above all, the bright spot on the defense was that it was top ten in pass defense in all categories. Schwartz will look to correct those areas and help unlock the potential of this team. Under the new defensive coordinator, the priority will be on rebuilding the front four. He will look to pressure the quarterback using his four-down lineman. Behind that, the defensive backs will play more man coverage on the outside and utilize zone coverage in the middle of the field.

Conclusion

Jim Schwartz will bring stability and the veteran presence this defense needs the most. He will bring a wide-nine scheme that fits the defensive pieces already in place. This hire will positively impact Myles Garrett and the other defensive linemen brought in. In addition, this move will elevate Denzel Ward and the other corners on this team. Those players will be enhanced by playing more man coverage which fits their play style more naturally. This was a great hire and it will help the defense and the team overall.
