Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo signed a 3-year, $67.5 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders and will be reunited with his former 2016 New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
McDaniels, now Raiders head coach, has found his new quarterback after releasing former quarterback Derek Carr in February.
Jimmy Garoppolo spent six years with the 49ers and appeared in the 2020 Super Bowl. The new Raiders quarterback will have multiple offensive weapons around him, including wide receiver Davante Adams, tight end Darren Waller and franchise-tagged running back Josh Jacobs. With the 2024 Super Bowl in Las Vegas, Garoppolo will be expected to make an impact immediately with a team in a win-now mode.
As a starter, Garoppolo is 40-17, the fourth-best in the NFL during that span. In 2022, Garoppolo was 8-3 and threw 2437 passing yards and 16 touchdowns in 11 games before a season-ending foot injury. The 49ers are expected to go in the direction of the young quarterback duo Trey Lance and Brock Purdy. Both quarterbacks are recovering from significant injuries and will likely compete for the 2023 starting spot.
The New York Jets were expected to pursue Garoppolo but are stuck in the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes and are running out of options as Rodgers awaits his decision.
