The finish to the season was disappointing for the Mariners. The fans know it and even the players know it. The fans have been clamoring for change all season long. The Mariners’ offense looked a lot better over the last five weeks of the season. They were arguably the hottest offense in baseball for the final month. Although it was a little too late, it leads to a few questions.
Can the Mariners keep that momentum on offense heading into next season? Will they keep Edgar as the hitting coach? Will they spend money to make the offense better? Which veterans will the Mariners keep? These are all questions that Mariners fans await as the offseason now approaches.
One thing is certain, the Mariners have a fun aura around them and many players want to stay in Seattle. One of those players is veteran 1B/DH Justin Turner.
Turner wants to be here. The rest of the team wants him here as well. That’s a positive sign for next season, now it’s up to the front office to make it happen.
Those are some solid comments coming from players who appear to be in Seattle for the near future. Having a guy like JT in the lineup can help in many ways. Sure, he might not have the pop in his bat like he did in his prime, but at 40 years old he’s still a solid ball player. He can help guys like Julio and Cal grow. He’s a World Series Champ and knows what it takes to get there.
During his time in Seattle, Turner hit .261 with a 124 OPS+ in 48 games after the trade. The front office would be dumb, not to bring him back, especially with what Jerry Dipoto stated about the need of real veterans who can make a difference. Turner is certainly one of those true veterans who make a difference both on the field and in the clubhouse.
