Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving has officially requested a trade from the Nets ahead of the trade deadline on Feb. 9.
This comes to the surprise to many, as the Nets sit in fourth place in the NBA Eastern Conference, but they await the return of Kevin Durant. He missed eleven straight games with an MCL sprain. The Nets are 4-7 in that span, most recently getting blown out in Boston by 43.
Nothing new for Kyrie
It may be a surprise given the winning record for Brooklyn, but Irving has wanted out of situations before. In the summer of 2017, Irving requested a trade away from the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was granted that request and landed in Boston. It appeared to be the missing piece for a Boston Celtics team that had impressive young talent.
Irving played two seasons with the Celtics before announcing his departure to Brooklyn in 2019 to team up with superstar and friend, Kevin Durant. This left a sour taste in Celtic’s fans mouths. They were not happy.
Kyrie Irving is an eight-time all-star, and a bona fide superstar in the league. The drama he brings is being questioned by many people around the league.
With this being the last year of his contract, the Nets will have to decide whether to gather assets now in a Kyrie Irving trade, or risk him leaving in free agency. Finally, Irving will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and will be 31 years old next season.
