During the summer of 2022, the Los Angeles Lakers moved on from Frank Vogel and hired Darvin Ham as head coach. This was a wise move as he had the experience, mentality, and leadership the front office sought. Fast forward two seasons, the Lakers fired Ham and hired JJ Redick on a four-year contract.
Ham was a phenomenal coach, but it was evident from the jump he would struggle with the Lakers. He seemed to step back in crunch time and make the wrong substitutions at the wrong time. These errors piled on top of each other, costing the Lakers a finals appearance in 2023 and a first-round exit in 2024.
By hiring Redick as the new leader in command, the Lakers hope to start the season fresh with an improved roster and revamped staff. The former NBA veteran has all the tools to succeed under the Los Angeles spotlight.
The JJ Redick and LeBron James duo will put the Lakers back into contention.
One of the most exciting aspects of hiring JJ Redick is his co-existence with the all-time great LeBron James. These two have a strong relationship off the court, and their knowledge of the game is undeniable.
James will inevitably work extremely well with Redick in charge, as he possesses nearly two decades of experience as a player. He understands how the game is played and what is needed to win as a team, which is what the Lakers have been lacking since their championship victory in 2020.
Redick could push the Lakers to show aggression in free agency and acquire abundant talent. This will put the players and staff in a great spot ahead of training camp and the regular season.
That said, Redick is one of the most knowledgeable people in the game. Following retirement, he wasted no time turning the page, accepting an analyst position for ESPN. Now, he has the opportunity to steer an iconic franchise to its 18th banner.
