Despite the Los Angeles Lakers‘ exceptional drafting techniques, the current roster is missing a true point guard who can facilitate and defend. While players like Dejounte Murray were considered, no deal was implemented. With the free agent market dwindling, the Lakers should pursue an elite playmaker in Tyus Jones on a multi-year contract.
In a starting position, Jones would fit right into the system of newly hired head coach JJ Redick. He is the most efficient guard in basketball and has evolved into one of the league’s best three-point shooters. He is the perfect contributor next to the superstar talents of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Though some may say D’Angelo Russell currently occupies the starting role, Jones brings more competency on both ends of the floor. However, permitting Russell to catch fire off the bench would torch defenses night in and night out.
Tyus Jones’ experience and impact should land him a long-term deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Tyus Jones’ nine years of experience could significantly help the Los Angeles Lakers return to the NBA Finals. He played a crucial role for Memphis in their 2022 playoff run, adding a Western Conference Semifinals run to his resume.
Once Jones joined D.C., his numbers took a prominent leap in relatively every category. Last season, the former Duke Wildcat averaged 12.0 points and 7.3 assists while drilling 41.4% of his three-point attempts. Moreover, Jones only turned the ball over once per game, backing up why he is regarded as an exceptional playmaker.
Regarding contract negotiations, Jones would likely agree to join the Lakers on a four-year, $110 million deal. He may request a player option before the final season, allowing him to test the waters in free agency and find a home elsewhere.
Nonetheless, Jones would be a great addition to the Lakers next season. His talent on the court is evident, but he would play a major role off the court in Bronny James‘ development. He could show James the ropes of prospering in the NBA as an undersized guard looking to earn minutes on championship contenders.
