Red Sox top prospect, Marcelo Mayer, has been promoted to AA Portland after a great start to the season. Mayer was drafted fourth overall by the Red Sox in the 2021 draft and was seen as the most talented player in the whole draft. He has certainly lived up to his hype so far as he is the youngest player since 2009 to be promoted to AA in the Red Sox organization.

Marcelo Mayer is the Future of the Red Sox

In his 35 games so far in A+ Greenville, Mayer was tearing it up at the plate. In 164 plate appearances, he was slashing .290/.366/.524 with seven home runs and 34 runs batted in. Marcelo has also been dazzling with the glove at shortstop so far, exceeding expectations of his defensive abilities.

Boston’s future is looking bright by the looks of the farm system. Marcelo Mayer currently ranks fifth on the MLB top prospects list. The Red Sox also have two other members on this list with Miguel Bleis at 74th and Ceddanne Rafaela at 83rd. This list included two others until very recently, with Triston Casas and Brayan Bello losing their prospect status.

While there’s a chance we could see Ceddanne Rafaela at the major league level by the end of this season, Marcelo Mayer still has some time left. If all goes well for Mayer, we could be seeing him make his debut as early as the end of the 2024 season. As for now, he is tearing it up and has earned his promotion to AA Portland.
