The former Ravens DC Mike Macdonald will become the youngest head coach in the NFL. After moving on from Pete Carroll earlier this offseason, the Seahawks went through a long coaching search. It apparently came down to two candidates, Lions OC Ben Johnson and Macdonald. The Seahawks held a second interview with the latter early this morning after Johnson announced he’d be staying in Detroit. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Seahawks plan to hire Mike Macdonald.

The deal is still being finalized, but the Seahawks have their next head coach. Finding their new coach was just the first step of the offseason. Mike Macdonald and the Seahawks now need to figure out where the Seahawks will go from here. Following consecutive 9-8 seasons, Geno Smith has proven that he is a serviceable QB. However, he’s not really a long-term option. The Seahawks could likely draft their next QB.

Macdonald had a quick rise to becoming a head coaching candidate. He rejoined the NFL ranked in 2021 as the Ravens Defensive Coordinator. Under him, the Ravens defense allowed the fewest points per game (16.5), while also recording the most sacks (60) and takeaways (31) this past season. That’s good news for the Hawks who had been known for having a top-tier defense during the early 2010s.

The Seahawks will bring Mike Macdonald in on a six-year deal according to Schefter. With Macdonald being a first-year head coach, it’ll be interesting to see who he and GM John Schneider bring in on the staff. Many of the top coordinators are off the board. It’s clearly a youth movement that could follow suit into the staff and roster.

The former Ravens DC beat out other candidates like Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Raiders DC Patrick Graham and Dallas Cowboys DC Dan Quinn.
