Josh Jacobs Aaron Jones

The Green Bay Packers are making a switch at their running back position after signing Josh Jacobs on Monday morning. Ian Rapoport has reported that the Packers tried to reach an extension with Aaron Jones but the two sides were off.

With the addition of Jacobs, the Packers could have gone one of two ways. They could have kept both Jacobs and Jones and had one of the best running back rooms in the NFL. It would have easily been a top 10 running back duo. One of them would have seen less playing time but they likely could have made it work, maybe splitting the drives or even the downs. Together, they could have given the Packers anywhere between 1,500 and 2,000 yards rushing. That number would be higher for all-purpose yards. Their offense would have been exceptional around Jordan Love.

The other option and the one the Packers chose is to stick with their newly acquired running back, Josh Jacobs. They have informed Aaron Jones of his release per Adam Schefter. The news came as a bit of a surprise, it’s not like Jones had a horrible season. In fact, the 2023 seasons for Jacobs and Jones were similar. Last season, Jones took a pay cut to stay with the Packers and he still had one year remaining on his contract. Jacobs was the third-best running back at the start of free agency, behind Saquon Barkley and D’Andre Swift. A market that could see an uptick after it stagnated some last season.

I would not be shocked if the market for a 29-year-old running back is not in his favor and he does in fact return to Green Bay. If that happens, they’re running back room would certainly be Top five. Especially considering they also have AJ Dillon, Emanuel Wilson and Patrick Taylor. The Packers would likely have to cut or trade one of the latter two, but a three-headed monster with Jacobs, Jones and Dillon could be dangerous for opposing defenses.
