Panthers Add DJ Chark, Continue to Build for Rookie QB

The Carolina Panthers signed DJ Chark to a one-year contract, and with that, have built the base of their offense. Chark finished with 30 catches for 502 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games for the Detroit Lions last year. It’s all together aside from the main missing piece. Whoever the Panthers pick first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft will have what is turning into somewhat talented yet very seasoned team.

This offense won’t have a lot of flash, but they will have something not a lot of teams holding the first overall pick usually have, and that’s reliability and experience. Joining the Panthers with DJ Chark is Adam Thielen who signed earlier this offseason and is the closest thing this team has to a “superstar” weapon. Once one of the top receivers in the league for the Minnesota Vikings, Thielen will likely be relied upon to move the chains. Chark, with his speed, will be the field stretcher. Thielen had 70 receptions for 716 yards and six scores last year.

The Panthers also added Hayden Hurst who finished last year on the Cincinnati Bengals with respectable numbers. In 13 games, Hurst had 52 receptions for 414 yards and two touchdowns. The offensive line is headlined by OT Ikem Ekwonu who’s coming off a solid rookie season. He’ll be in charge of keeping the Panthers future’s blindside safe come week one.

Rounding all of this out is running back Miles Sanders who’s another seasoned veteran coming off an NFC Championship. Sanders, while not a household name, is coming off of the best season out of any of the other recent acquires. He finished last season with 1,269 rushing yards and 11 scores on an efficient 4.9 yards per carry which led the Philadelphia Eagles backfield.

Altogether, it’s quite frankly nothing to really be excited about and one wouldn’t expect the Panthers to turn it around this year. But, this is a support group that a lot of rookie QBs what be lucky to have. And with the Panthers headed in the right direction in a subpar division, who knows what their real ceiling is.
