The NFL fined Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper $300,000 Tuesday after his “unacceptable conduct” during Carolina’s 26-0 loss Sunday to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
In a video, someone recorded Tepper throwing a drink at a visiting Jaguars crowd while in his open-air suite at Jacksonville’s EverBank Stadium. Tepper’s reaction appeared to be after Carolina quarterback Bryce Young threw an interception with just under three minutes left in the game.
“All NFL personnel are expected to conduct themselves at all times in ways that respect our fans and favorably reflect on their team and the NFL,” the NFL said in a statement.
Tepper Issues An Apology
Tepper regretted his actions and issued an apology statement afterward.
“I am deeply passionate about this team and regret my behavior on Sunday,” Tepper said. “I should have let NFL stadium security handle any issues that arose. I respect the NFL’s code of conduct and accept the League’s discipline for my behavior.”
The fine by the NFL is similar to the one given out to the late Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams in 2009 after he made an obscene gesture at Bills fans while celebrating Tennessee’s win over Buffalo. The NFL fined Adams $250,000 for the incident.
Tepper has been the owner of the Carolina Panthers since 2018 when he bought the team for $2.275 billion. The team has struggled under Tepper, winning fewer than eight games in each of the last six seasons. The Panthers are currently 2-14 and will finish with the worst record in the NFL this season. Carolina is 31-67 since Tepper became the owner.
Being fined $300,000 will not seem to matter too much to David Tepper. Tepper is one of the richest owners in the league, having a net worth of $20.6 billion, according to Forbes.
