On Thursday morning, the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders agreed to a trade that sent former first round pick Jahan Dotson to Philly. The Eagles traded a 2025 third round pick and two seventh round picks and got a fifth round pick in addition to Jahan Dotson. The Eagles will still have a third round pick next year, along with six other picks in the first five rounds.

Dotson had been reportedly battling for a position in the wide receiver room for the Commanders. This trade gives the Eagles a potential third starting wide receiver and gives Jahan Dotson a fresh start.

Rookie Season

Jahan Dotson came on strong his rookie season. After being drafted 16th overall, he carried high expectations.

Dotson met those expectations immediately. Dotson scored two touchdowns on three receptions (five targets) in his first NFL game. In the following three weeks he scored two more touchdowns before getting injured. The injury sidelined him for the next five weeks.

The rest of the season was a rollercoaster. He scored three more touchdowns and had his first 100 yard receiving game, but also had five games with three or less catches. He played well enough his rookie year for many to expect a `breakout season in year two.

Sophomore Season

From media to casual fans, plenty were very high on Dotson coming into his second year. Since his first year had been impacted by injury and quarterback play, there was plenty of hope for the 2023 season.

Although he played the full season his second year, Dotson had fewer yards and fewer touchdowns. He did have more targets but lacked the efficiency of his rookie year.

High Hopes

The 2024-2025 started very promising for the Commanders with the drafting of their (potential) franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels won the Heisman last year at LSU and climbed his way up draft boards before being selected number two overall by Washington.

Quarterback has been the biggest question mark and inconsistency for the Commanders. Taylor Heinecke, Carson Wentz, and Sam Howell started at the position for the past two years and all of them struggled to maintain any semblance of success.

Again, Dotson was a player picked to have a true breakout season with Daniels at QB. This did not seem to be the case as reports out of camp had Dotson closer to fighting for a roster spot than a starting spot. With Terry McLaurin the clear number one, reporters have been focused on the number two and number three wide receiver spots. Dyami Brown, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Luke McCaffrey (Christian McCaffrey‘s brother) all seem poised to play big roles alongside with McLaurin. From the camp reports, Dotson was not separating himself from these guys and was looking like a potential cut candidate.

Expectations

The Philadelphia Eagles have one of top wide receiver duos in the league with A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith. Dotson should slide in behind these two as the third receiver. None of the other options separated themselves in camp for the Eagles, which could be what gave the team a push to go get someone to fill that role.

Jahan Dotson has had success but nothing close to the top two guys in this offense. Being the third wide receiver doesn’t mean he is the third option, though. The Eagles have a prolific run offense that rides the legs of Jalen Hurts and newly signed Saquon Barkley. The passing offense will be a consistent dose of both A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith with tight end Dallas Goedert getting plenty of opportunities, too. This leaves Dotson a minimal, but potentially very important role in this offense. If he is able to show why he was drafted 16th overall, the Eagles may have gotten a steal.
