Pius Suter signed a 2-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks this week. The contract gives the 27-year-old Zurich, Switzerland native a total of $3.2 million over the two-year span.
Next year will be Suter’s 4th season in the NHL. Suter entered the league as an undrafted forward, signed by the Chicago Blackhawks in July of 2020. As a rookie, Suter scored 14 goals and had 13 assists in 55 games. Suter then played the next two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Over his three-year career, Suter has tallied 43 goals, and 44 assists, totaling in 87 points.
Patrik Allvin, General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks, had positive thoughts to share on Pius Suter. In an interview, Allvin said that “Adding a player who has scored 43 goals the past three seasons will be a boost for us up front and he will also add to our penalty-killing unit as well. His flexibility to be able to play down the middle or on the wing will give Toc (Head Coach Rick Tocchet) more options when putting together his forward lines.”
After signing, Suter said in an interview, “I could tell they kind of did their homework on me and at the end, that’s what excites me about it the most. They kind of know what I am as a player. But yeah, six weeks has been a bit longer, but now (I’m) excited that I finally know where I’m going and excited to get started.”
The six weeks Suter mentioned are the number of weeks it’s been since the start of free agency. In those six weeks, the Canucks have been very active. With the addition of Suter, Vancouver has signed six free agents from other teams this offseason. On top of that, Vancouver also signed restricted free agent Nils Hoglander back in July.
The Canucks finished 6th in the Pacific Division last season with an overall record of 38-37-7. Vancouver also finished 12 points short of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. With all of these new additions, it will be exciting to see if the Canucks can make a push for the playoffs this season.
