Since the 2018 World Series Championship, the Boston Red Sox have shown no interest when it comes to signing their superstars. However, the Red Sox should prioritize signing Triston Casas who is an upcoming star.
The Red Sox are not a small market organization. They shouldn’t be letting go of homegrown players who turn into stars while having one of the highest payrolls in the MLB. The players consist of Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, Kyle Schwarber, etc.
Fortunately, the Red Sox did sign the franchise star player Rafael Devers to an extension last year. Luckily, the Red Sox under new front office personnel, have signed promising young athlete Ceddanne Rafaela to a long-term extension. In addition, before opening day the Red Sox also signed Brayan Bello, a promising young starter.
However, there is one man who hasn’t been extended but should be immediately. That guy is named Triston Casas, an upcoming star first baseman. Casas has shown more promise than any of the guys besides Devers.
Last year was Casas first full season in the MLB, in which he made it look easy. Casas hit 24 home runs, 65 RBIs, and a .263 batting average. In addition, he was sixth in the AL with a .367 on-base percentage, 10th in slugging percentage with .490, and fifth in on-base plus slugging with .857.
Entering 2024, Casas has started where he left off by hitting six home runs in 21 games. Therefore showing that he is deserving of getting an extension this year, which would help the Sox out.
Signing young stars quickly has been a trend recently in the MLB, this allows teams to be able to get a “discount” at an affordable contract for both parties.
Lastly, looking at the big picture with the Red Sox signing two young players, the Red Sox should extend Triston Casas this year.
