The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, October 30th. For the year the Steelers are 2-5 while the Eagles are the lone undefeated team at 6-0. Let’s look at some key stats that could help Pittsburgh turn things around.
Points Allowed – <20
In order to win this game Pittsburgh is going to have to force Philadelphia to do things they haven’t done all year. The Eagles have scored at least 20 points in every game this season, and have scored 24 points or more in all but one game. Pittsburgh on the other hand has never broken 23 points which they did in Week 1…in an overtime game.
The Steelers have kept the high-octane Miami Dolphins and the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers to under 20 points in each of the last two contests. They’ve also performed well against an MVP-caliber, dual-threat quarterback in their own division over the years. It would be a tall task, but keeping the scoring down in this one will be a huge key to victory.
Turnovers Forced – 3+
A way the Steelers could keep the score down in this one would be to force turnovers. We saw this as a huge issue last week against Miami when the Steelers dropped at least four intercept-able balls.
The Eagles have the best turnover differential in the league at +12. That’s double the second-place team in the category. With just two turnovers all season for Philadelphia, the Steelers would have to turn up the heat to create these mistakes. That said, Tua Tagovailoa had just three interceptions in his four games before playing Pittsburgh and they put him in a lot of bad situations.
With a defense that has been forced to do a lot of different things the last few weeks, maybe they can do something to confuse the Philadelphia offense. Getting the Eagles off the field and giving their offense as many chances as possible is crucial to Pittsburgh’s success on Sunday.
Passing Yards – 300+
The Philadelphia Eagles have yet to surrender 300 yards through the air in 2022. They have a stingy pass defense led by Cornerbacks Darius Slay and James Bradberry.
Kenny Pickett has thrown for 300 yards just once so far in his young NFL career. It was in the blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills where he attempted 52 passes and the Bills defense eventually gave up underneath throws.
While the Eagles are susceptible to giving up yardage on the ground (three games giving up 120+ yards rushing) they would rather do that and let you try to run your way to wins instead of pass. The Steelers have slowly (so slowly) expanded the passing offense each week since Pickett’s debut. If this can be the week they open things up they might just find the secret to beating this dominant Eagles defense.
Let’s face it – it’s looking bleak for Pittsburgh in this one, and yet, they’ve surprised us before. But to beat this Eagles team that has dominated on both sides of the ball this season the Steelers are going to have to do things that haven’t been done. Keeping the score down through forcing turnovers, then finding a way to get their offense going through the air could prove vital in going for a victory on Sunday.
