Stefon Diggs Trade

The Buffalo Bills made a major trade on April 3, shipping star WR Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans for a package of draft picks. Diggs finds himself paired with a budding star QB in C.J. Stroud. However, he will have stiff competition for targets with Nico Collins and Tank Dell, who both had spectacular seasons last year. On the other hand, the Bills now have 160 targets up for grabs. What are the fantasy implications of the Stefon Diggs trade?

Winners

C.J. Stroud

As a rookie, Stroud threw for 23 touchdowns and 4108 yards in 15 games. Even with many of his receivers missing time throughout the season, Stroud was elite and delivered one of the greatest rookie seasons in NFL history. The addition of Diggs now gives him the best group of receivers in the league. Stroud’s lack of rushing production prevents him from being a top-3 option at the position. Still, between the talent around him and his passing ability, he is a very safe top-6 option heading into the 2024 season.

Dalton Kincaid

With the amount of targets being vacated, Kincaid is poised to be the biggest winner of the Stefon Diggs trade. While Dawson Knox was injured for a while, Kincaid was a top-end TE play. With a year of experience now under his belt, Kincaid should be Josh Allen‘s top target. In 2024, Kincaid has the potential to be a matchup-proof top-4 TE.

Curtis Samuel

An early sleeper in redraft is former Carolina Panther and Washington Commander Curtis Samuel. He has quietly been a consistent producer in the NFL, posting at least 600 yards in 4 of the last 5 seasons and topping out at 851 in 2020. Furthermore, the players he has to beat out for the WR1 job, or WR2 if Buffalo drafts a WR, are not good. Receivers such as Khalil Shakir, Justin Shorter, and Mack Hollins should not pose a threat to Samuel’s increased workload. As a result, Samuel should crush his current ADP of WR72.

Losers

All Houston Wide Receivers

As great as the Stefon Diggs trade is for Stroud and the Texans offense as a whole, it limits the ceiling of the individual players. Already last season, it was hard to predict which of Dell or Collins would have the big game. Now, Diggs is in the mix as well. All are great best-ball plays, but all three are within the top 24 in WR ADP in redraft. Unless Stroud has a historic season, at least one of the three will fail to maintain WR2 status.

Josh Allen

Moving from a known stud receiver like Diggs to Samuel or a rookie is certainly a big question mark. However, Allen is still an elite fantasy quarterback. He provides so much value on the ground that a slight hit to his passing stats does not knock him out of the upper tier. Allen may have fallen from the overall QB1 position, but he is still an easy top-3 option.
