This World Cup may be the last dance of the Neymar Jr. era. So what are the expectations for Seleção in the few upcoming weeks?

A squad loaded with superstars

Tite announced the 26 men that will follow him to Qatar a few days ago. Brazil has never lacked top-tier footballers, but it’s been a long time since we witnessed such a well-built roster. They possess two of the world’s best goalkeepers who have the qualities to start anywhere else in Alisson and Ederson. The battle for the starting spot will be a tough one. Thiago Silva and Marquinhos are experienced leaders of the defensive line. Casemiro and Fabinho solidify the midfield for the fiery attacks. Except for a lock in Neymar Jr., Tite will have a hard time picking the remaining players up front for Brazil. Martinelli, Jesus, or Vinicius Jr. are all worthy of a place in the starting 11. Neymar could move back to play CAM. But the rests remain a toss-up.

The squad is stacked. Even Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Magalhaes didn’t get called up, although they are in fine form.

Is the Sixth title on the way?

Odds from betting companies show that Brazil is the favorite to go all the way this year. Star power is everywhere. The proven winner’s mentality of Casemiro and Thiago Silva is crucial to the younger Seleção, just like how it was with Cafu in 2002 or Carlos Alberto in 1970. And just like previous winning campaigns, Brazil has an attacking leader. Pele, Romario, Ronaldo, and now Neymar. PSG’s number 10 is well-respected, even among Brazillian players with personalities. We saw numerous times Neymar Jr. speaking up to protect younger teammates after they received criticism for showboating their flare. That’s what a winner needs: leaders taking care of others. Twenty long years after the previous feat, can they do this again?

The problem

Although no one should count out Brazil, as they have always been a formidable team, they seem easily cracked under pressure. In the Copa America Final, Brazil dominated the game, shooting more shots and possessing more balls. But it was all for nothing. They always seem to lack the finesse in big games and big moments. Let’s see if Tite’s men can be more composed in the upcoming matches.

The stars

As mentioned before, Brazil isn’t short of playmakers. Here are some notable personnel for Tite.

Alisson: the stopper: With phenomenal reflex and ball skills and fantastic on 1v1, he is a trustworthy last stop for Brazil.

Thiago Silva: the captain. He has the experience and calmness every team needs from their center-back.

Casemiro: the anchor. His ball recoveries and defensive mindset allow attackers to roam with ease.

Neymar Jr.: the superstar. There are few like him this generation, with magnificent dribbling and pin-point assists.

Vinicius Jr.: the big-timer: Probably the most clutch in Tite’s hand, he is here to score in the big moment.

The X-factor

Each team needs some X-factors that can bring unanticipated changes to the game. Here are Brazil’s finest.

• Lucas Paqueta: He always seems to have a great connection with Neymar. Let’s see if he can be the midfield leader.

• Gabriel Martinelli: With blazing speed and skills, he could be a valid option for Tite if Brazil struggles to find a way.

• Rodrygo: Remember when he banged in a last-minute crucial in last year’s UCL? He could change the faith in the game.

Realistic Prediction for Brazil

Brazil’s last campaign with Tite has no other goal than to make it to the grand finale and bring the cup home. The quality is there. A realistic prediction for them is to be the RUNNER-UP. Yes, they are the favorite, but in big moments can they capitalize?
