The Boston Red Sox are off to a great start heading into the All-Star break. Despite their “success” and many fans calling for the team to make moves at the trade deadline, but the Red Sox should be cautious of their prospects before making a deal for a one-year rental.

Since 2020, the Red Sox Ownership has implemented a blueprint of building within the minor leagues and creating a strong farm system. The Red Sox have seemed to accomplish the goal by developing their young prospects who are on pace to make an impact by 2025.

Marcelo Mayer

Mayer was drafted fourth overall in 2021 and was named the future shortstop to replace Xander Bogaerts. Mayer has shown he is on track to prove that statement correctly. Currently, Mayer has dominated Double-A by posting a .301 batting average, .837 OPS, seven home runs, and 36 RBIs in the first half. Mayer’s estimated arrival to the bigs is this year if he continues this pace.

Roman Anthony

Anthony has been a standout baseball player after getting his name on the map by hitting a 450-foot home run in High School. However, he is a baseball player who not only can hit for power and contact, but also run at a high rate of speed. He can turn into a star player like his pro comp in Jarren Duran, who could turn into his teammate soon. So Far in Double-A, Anthony has posted a .241 batting average, .790 OPS, 10 home runs, and 27 RBIs.

Kyle Teel

Teel was a standout catcher at the University of Virginia becoming one of the best in the country. The Red Sox drafted him in last year’s draft hoping he could develop into a future star alongside Connor Wong. This year in Double-A Teel has had a great season putting up a .298 batting average, .839 OPS, eight home runs, and 49 RBI’s. It might not be long til we see Teel called up to Triple-A soon.

Nick Yorke

Yorke is currently being slept on as a prospect, he was drafted in 2020 in hopes of becoming the next Red Sox great second baseman. In 2024, Yorke has been off to a strong start in Triple-A which can lead to boosting him to the Majors shortly after the All-Star break. He is hitting a .280 batting average, 10 home runs, 44 RBIs, and a .792 OPS. In addition, the Red Sox should easily consider bringing him up to get some experience and contribute to a playoff run for Boston.

Lastly, this shows exactly why the Red Sox shouldn’t force a half-season rental of players by giving up the farm system. The Red Sox have a chance to create a great young core for the next six years.
