On Thursday, current Notre Dame Fighting Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees interviewed for the Alabama Crimson Tide’s vacant OC position.
Alabama lost their previous offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien as he returned to the New England Patriots. They’ve become accustomed to this process, as this’ll be their fifth OC since 2015. Lane Kiffin, Brian Daboll, Steve Sarkisian, and the aforementioned Bill O’Brien make up the last four, all of which have strong resumes.
Who is Tommy Rees?
Tommy Rees is reportedly the top candidate for head coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide. Rees played in 47 games for the Fighting Irish during his four years at the university from 2010-2013. He did, however, split time during much of his career.
Rees spent an extremely short stint in the NFL, when Washington signed him, but they released him a week later. He began coaching in 2015 with Northwestern as an offensive graduate assistant.
Rees then spent one year as an offensive assistant for the San Diego Chargers before returning to his alma mater Notre Dame in 2017. He served as quarterbacks coach until 2020, when he was promoted to offensive coordinator.
Since then, Notre Dame has been in the top 50 for total offense every season, but never in the top 20. They’ve had some average quarterbacks in that span, but Rees hasn’t exactly willed his group to tremendous success relative to what Alabama has normalized.
Despite this, reports show that Saban would be excited to hire Rees, and $2 million is on the table for him. Notre Dame has already stated that they are willing to match that, so it may come down to Tommy Rees making the decision for himself. Stay with his alma mater, or head to Tuscaloosa and coach the team that once defeated him in the 2012 BCS Championship.
