Sports fans always love a comeback story and MLB fans are witness one of the best comeback seasons ever. Baltimore Orioles star Trey Mancini is going to take part in the 2021 Home Run Derby in Colorado less than a year after being declared cancer free.
Since coming to the majors in 2016 Mancini has been a fan favorite around the league.
A Strong Start
His official rookie year was in 2017 where he recorded 159 hits, 26 doubles, 24 homers, 78 RBI’s and a .293 batting average. His performance was powerful enough to earn him the rookie-of-the-year award.
2018 was a bit of a down year but 2019 was a career season.
In his third full season he finished with career highs in all of the major offensive categories. He had 106 runs scored, 175 hits, 38 doubles, 35 homers, 63 walks and 97 RBI’s.
Life Changing News
In April of 2020 Mancini, at only age 28, was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer.
He went through surgery and then months of chemotherapy. In November of 2020 he completed his chemo and was declared cancer free.
He did not let this hold him back and as soon as he was cleared to play baseball he worked as hard as he could to get back onto the major league field.
Mancini’s Return
On Opening Day of 2021, April 2nd, Trey Mancini started at first base for the Orioles as they took on the Boston Red Sox. As he was introduced he received one of the biggest welcomes from fans that baseball has ever witnessed.
He went 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.
He is performing as if he never missed a beat. So far he has 73 hits, 16 doubles, 14 homers, 42 runs scored, 29 walks, 52 RBI’s and a .256 batting average.
To make this comeback even more special he has accepted MLB’s offer to participate in the Home Run Derby on Monday July 12 in Denver Colorado.
He has some serious competition already as Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angeles and reigning derby champ Pete Alonso of the New York Mets have also been announced as participants.
Despite the big bats Mancini might have to face he is going to go out there and put on a show for the fans who have missed him so much over the past season.
