USA women’s volleyball is advancing to the medal rounds after thumping the Dominican Republic in three sets. The women’s volleyball team has never won a gold medal.
Set One
The US jumped out to a 8-3 lead and it grew to 12-4. The DR just looked lost as the US lead swelled to 16-6. The DR felt they needed a timeout and there were no arguments there. Despite the effort, the DR couldn’t come back and a Micah Hancock ace won the set 25-11 as the US could do no wrong.
Set Two
The Dominican Republic looked better in the early going. The first set no doubt was a wake up call. However, the US lead grew to 11-5 for the United States. Jordyn Poulter and Jordan Thompson, who were injured, were available to play in case of emergency. Poulter had to leave the prior match in a wheel chair due to a serious ankle sprain. Thompson also injured her ankle. The US began to roll again due to good play and errors by the DR. But, it was close. A timeout was called with the US having a 23-16 lead. The DR roared back forcing Karch Kiraly’s hand. A timeout was needed. The US won out of the timeout 25-20.
Set Three
The DR started strong in set three. Annie Drews was making her presence felt as she led the team in kills. The US tried to pull away but the DR kept it close. The DR lost their final challenge after reviewing a touch or no touch call. Drews kept rolling and had the look on her eye like she wanted to close things out. The DR had to call timeout after a Kim Hill ace serve which made the score 21-17 as victory neared for Team USA. The DR continued to claw back, but the US took the match in three sets as the final set was won 25-19.
