Dillon Gabriel, one of the top quarterbacks in the transfer portal, has announced his commitment to Oregon.
Who is Dillon Gabriel?
Former Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Monday and has already found his new home. Gabriel, now a sixth-year senior, started the last two seasons with Oklahoma, racking up 6,828 passing yards and 73 total touchdowns. Because of the COVID exception year in 2020 and medically redshirting in 2021, he can suit up in 2024 for his sixth season of college football.
With 50 games under his belt, the 22-year-old is the most experienced QB in the portal. He’s also the most productive, finishing sixth in total passing yards among FBS quarterbacks this season. Throughout his career with UCF and Oklahoma, Gabriel compiled 14,865 passing yards, 125 touchdowns, 26 interceptions, a 63.1% completion percentage, 1,060 rushing yards, and 26 rushing touchdowns. Gabriel is ranked the eighth overall quarterback in the transfer portal according to 247Sports.
Oregon and The Big 10
According to ON3’s Pete Nakos, USC and Oregon emerged as the favorites to land Dillon Gabriel, but everything seemed to be trending toward the Ducks. Oregon will lose their senior QB and Heisman candidate Bo Nix to the upcoming NFL Draft and need a new starter to lead them into the Big 10. Nix was also a transfer who turned his career around and became one of the most accurate passers in the nation. It should be a great fit for Gabriel, who is already a more finished product than Nix was when he arrived in Eugene.
Dillon Gabriel will be the most decorated quarterback entering the Big 10 as soon as he arrives. But the real question is, can Oregon replace one Heisman candidate with another?
Dante Moore Also Headed to Eugene?
The Ducks are in the market for potentially two transfer quarterbacks this offseason. Former UCLA quarterback and five-star recruit Dante Moore has also been considering a transfer to Oregon. According to ON3’s Chad Simmons, Moore and the Ducks have been in contact, and there is a good chance that he will take a visit to Eugene this week. Moore has made it known that he is not only looking for a place where the QB1 job is open but rather a place where he can be developed. This would make Oregon a great destination, allowing him to sit behind Gabriel for a year before he takes over as the starter in his junior year.
