Ty Thompson Expected To Enter Transfer Portal

The Oregon Ducks have gone to the transfer portal a lot over the last decade: Anthony Brown, Dakota Prukop, Bo Nix and now Dillon Gabriel. Those are all examples of quarterbacks that have committed through the portal. With Gabriel announcing his commitment to Oregon, it appears that the 2021 recruit Ty Thompson might be headed to the transfer portal.

The tweet has no caption but appears to have helmets lined up on a shelf with Thompson walking away with his pads. Ty Thompson has had the skills to be a starting-caliber quarterback but has not been able to develop at Oregon. In three seasons,  Thompson played sparingly over the course of 17 games. Overall, he is 42-of-66 passing (63.6%) for 456 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions.

Thompson was a highly-touted five-star recruit out of Gilbert, Arizona. He was the No. 1 overall prospect in the state, the No. 6 quarterback in the class and the No. 31 overall prospect in the class. In his time at Oregon, he’s been behind Brown and Nix (2 years). In the spring, Oregon Coach Dan Lanning appeared to be high on Thompson.

“Yeah, it’s great, you know, Ty did an awesome job,” Lanning said. “(He took a big shot today and) turned it into a big play touchdown opportunity. So it’s good to see him out there operate and execute at a high level.”

Though, now that it has been confirmed. With Ty Thompson heading out, as of now it leaves the QB room to just Gabriel and Austin Novosad.

With the Ducks in the mix for Dante Moore as well, Thompson headed to the portal makes sense. He was going to get buried on the depth chart behind two starting-caliber QBs. Entering the portal, he could look to join a program that is rebuilding. A team where he can prove he belongs.

Potential Landing Spots

Oregon State

The Beavers not only are headed into a rebuild, but also need a QB. They could give Thompson a chance to start while playing against mostly a Mountain West schedule. The Beavers haven’t seen Thompson play in the Oregon-Oregon State rivalry game but they’d probably be one of the top Power 5 schools for the junior quarterback.

Boise State

Another team that needs a quarterback. With Taylen Green entering the transfer portal, Thompson would provide the same caliber of play style. With BSU, Thompson would play against two Pac-12 teams: Washington State and OSU. The Broncos went 3-0 after firing Andy Avalos, so they may be on the verge of a rebuild.

It’s unclear as to where Ty Thompson plans to visit, but the two schools above could be considered.
